Moving valuation is the level of liability your mover accepts if your belongings are lost or damaged in transit or in storage. Every Moving of America move includes Basic coverage at no charge: $1.00 per pound for New Jersey local moves and $0.60 per pound for interstate moves. Full Value Protection (FVP) raises that to the declared value of your shipment, costs $75 per $10,000 of coverage with a $500 deductible, and extends up to $100,000 on local and long distance moves. The question we hear most is simple: if I hire a careful, reputable mover, why do I need extra protection at all? The answer is the same reason excellent drivers still carry car insurance. Weather, road conditions, and accidents outside anyone’s control are part of moving, no matter how skilled the crew is. Moving of America is fully licensed, insured, and accredited (USDOT #1601312, NJ License #39PC00096600), our claims rate sits well below the national average, and we still recommend Full Value Protection for most households. If you are planning a local move in New Jersey or an interstate move, this page explains exactly what each coverage level pays so you can decide before you sign.
If you decline Full Value Protection, you are automatically enrolled in Standard Valuation, also called Basic coverage, Limited Liability, or Released Value. It is the minimum required by the U.S. Department of Transportation for interstate moves and by the New Jersey Department of Law & Public Safety for local moves, and it costs nothing extra.
The catch is how it is calculated. Basic coverage pays $0.60 per pound per article on interstate moves and $1.00 per pound on New Jersey local moves, regardless of what the item cost you. A 10-pound laptop worth $1,500 is covered for $6 on an interstate move. Shipment weight is determined either by a certified scale or by a cubic-foot formula, where one cubic foot equals seven pounds. Basic coverage works well for lower-value items, and accepting it requires your signature on the shipping documents.
Full Value Protection is a higher level of mover liability, offered directly by Moving of America, that covers your shipment up to its declared value during moving and storage. You do not need to buy a separate policy. If something on your inventory is lost or damaged, we are accountable for repair, replacement, or compensation, less your deductible.
Insurance is a different product. Cargo liability insurance from a third-party provider, such as Baker Insurance, MovingInsurance.com, or your insurer of choice, is issued under its own policy documents and covers risks on its own terms. FVP has limits, and for very high-value shipments it may not match the full replacement value of everything you own. Review your needs carefully, and if you do purchase outside insurance, let your Move Advisor know so it is noted on your file.
FVP covers most incidents, but it has clear exclusions, and we would rather you read them now than discover them on a claim. FVP does not cover items in boxes or containers that Moving of America did not pack, damage to compressed wood furniture, or damage from natural disasters such as fire, hurricanes, tornadoes, windstorms, and hail. It also does not cover items stored outside Moving of America’s control, or items you did not record with a declared value on your inventory form. If you plan to pack fragile items yourself, consider having our professional packing services handle those boxes so they stay eligible.
Any item worth more than $100 per pound must be declared and approved in advance. That includes jewelry, cash and checks, coins, precious metals, watches, collectibles, antiques, fine art, oriental rugs, furs, important documents, medications, alcohol, laptops, tablets, phones, and similar articles. Undeclared high-value items carry limited liability.

Your coverage options stay the same across services, but the details differ by move type.
New Jersey local moves. Basic coverage pays $1.00 per pound, and FVP extends up to $100,000. Our New Jersey local movers review both with you at the estimate.

Elite White Glove moves. FVP coverage extends up to $150,000 for our most comprehensive service level.

No. FVP is a level of mover liability offered directly by Moving of America, with no separate policy required. Moving insurance is purchased from a third-party provider and follows that provider's policy terms. Some customers use both for high-value shipments.
FVP excludes items in boxes not packed by Moving of America, compressed wood furniture, damage from natural disasters such as fire and hurricanes, items stored outside our control, and items not recorded with a declared value on your inventory form.
Declare each one before your move date and have it approved by Moving of America, and list it on your inventory form with its value. This includes jewelry, collectibles, fine art, electronics, and important documents. Undeclared high-value items carry limited liability.
The deductible is the amount you pay out of pocket on a claim. With our standard FVP option, a $500 deductible applies. Choosing a higher deductible lowers your coverage cost.
Contact our Claims Department by phone or email as soon as you notice loss or damage. Provide copies of your shipping documents and proof of damage, and we will work to repair, replace, or compensate quickly.
FVP covers up to $100,000 on local and long distance moves and up to $150,000 with Elite White Glove. For shipments beyond that, we work with third-party providers for coverage up to $150,000. Ask your Move Advisor for details.
