To bag or remove a meter, contact Montgomery County DOT at 240-777-8740 at least a week ahead. Approval is not guaranteed. Under a 2019 county rate resolution, the charge is $100 per meter for the first hour, plus $2 per meter per hour after that, along with the lost meter revenue.
Downtown Silver Spring meters run from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., Monday through Saturday, so a Saturday or late-afternoon move does not get free curb space. Outside downtown, the county runs residential permit parking areas, and county code limits where heavy commercial vehicles can park on public roads.
Takoma Park, just south, has its own government and rules, and many homes called Silver Spring are actually inside it. Past Eastern Avenue, you are in Washington, DC, where DDOT sets the rules. We confirm which area your home is in before we quote, since it changes the permit, lead time, and cost.
Silver Spring has several parkways that are closed to moving trucks. Sligo Creek Parkway runs about five and a half miles from Takoma Park through Silver Spring to Wheaton, and it bans commercial vehicles. It also closes to cars on Sundays between Old Carroll Avenue and MD 320. Other park roads nearby have similar rules.
