We chose Moving of America because of the good reviews, Joey the project manager was great, our local NJ pickup experience was genuinely excellent.. crew was professional, efficient, careful with our belongings, and overall gave us confidence that we had chosen the right company for our interstate move.

Unfortunately, the interstate portion of the move completely ruined that experience.

What we later discovered is that interstate moves are clearly not handled the same way as their local operations, despite being led to believe the move would remain within their own team. Once our shipment left NJ, communication, accountability, and overall professionalism changed.

By that point, Moving of America had already collected the majority of the payment, while the remaining balance was due to the company handling the delivery.

At delivery, the driver who was contracted out called me and said he didn’t think he could get into the neighborhood and that he would have to go and get a shuttle. I asked him how many guys he had, he indicated 2.. I said why don’t we use my own smaller moving truck instead, and the driver confirmed and to meet him a mile from our house with our truck.

Only after we arrived at the transfer point, no helpers were there- only the driver and at that point, we were informed for the first time that because we used our own truck, delivery labor was cancelled entirely. This was never disclosed beforehand. No revised agreement or change in scope was provided or signed. We were suddenly left responsible for unloading, unwrapping, and moving an entire household into our home ourselves after arriving in our new state only hours earlier with two young children.

The driver would not transfer the belongings into our truck until payment was made, despite the agreed delivery services no longer being performed as originally contracted.

Because everything remained wrapped at the transfer point, there was no realistic ability to inspect our belongings for damage there. After completing the move ourselves and removing the wrapping inside the home, before having to return all of the moving blankets because the driver said MofA would charge him if he didn’t return all of them, we discovered damage to a dresser and mirror.

What has been most disappointing is how the situation was handled afterward. Our move took place in February, and after more than a month of detailed back-and-forth communication attempting to resolve this professionally, the company ultimately stopped responding altogether. Multiple requests for the recorded phone call from the day of delivery were ignored. Formal complaints were filed with the Better Business Bureau and the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, yet even after those filings there was still no meaningful effort to resolve the situation.

The only offer ever made was a $300 “goodwill” payment intended to cover both the damaged items and the significant delivery issues. Within the release documents for their “goodwill” offer you essentially waive your rights from later pursuing any public reviews related to your dispute and the company is not deemed responsible for anything, which is ironic because no responsibility was taken anyway. They provided no willingness to reasonably negotiate, no meaningful counteroffer, and no acknowledgment of the fact that the contracted delivery services were never actually completed.

This review is not being written simply because issues occurred during a move — things happen stuff can break. It is being written because of the lack of transparency, the last-minute change in delivery execution, the refusal to provide requested documentation, and the complete lack of accountability once the interstate portion began.

The local NJ team was genuinely very good, which honestly makes this even more disappointing. If you are considering Moving of America for an interstate move I genuinely hope your experience is much better then ours because our interstate experience was very different from what was represented upfront.

Why San Francisco Is the Top Destination for NJ Relocators

Residential moving specialists preparing belongings for safe transport in New Jersey.

New Jersey households move to San Francisco mainly for one reason:, a career step. The Bay Area remains the center of gravity for tech, AI, biotech, and venture-backed startups, and a job offer in San Francisco is the trigger behind most NJ-to-SF moves. If you’re searching for movers from New Jersey to San Francisco or an NJ to San Francisco moving company, planning early is essential. A return-to-office mandate or a startup acquisition can compress that timeline to a few weeks.

The second driver is lifestyle. Proximity to the coast, the food, and a denser, more walkable city than most of New Jersey offer. Whether you need residential movers in San Francisco or apartment movers in San Francisco, the mover relocating for a March start date and the family planning a summer move are running very different clocks, and the trigger shapes everything downstream.

Whatever the reason, the move crosses a state line, which makes it an interstate move under federal law. That changes how the job must be licensed, estimated, and insured, and it is where the risk hides. The fear we hear most is paying a deposit to a middleman who never owned a truck, only to watch the price climb at the time of delivery. For your peace of mind, trust licensed and insured movers in San Francisco. Moving of America removes that by operating as the carrier on your move, the company that owns the trucks, employs the crew, and signs the binding estimate.

5 Key Reasons Families and Businesses Trust Moving of America for New Jersey to San Francisco Moves

Moving from New Jersey to San Francisco is not a job you hand to just anyone. It is nearly 2,900 miles of highway, and your entire home is riding on the company you choose. Too many people learn the hard way that a cheap cross-country quote often turns into delayed deliveries, damaged furniture, and surprise charges at the destination. We built Moving of America to be the company New Jersey families and businesses can count on for exactly this kind of move. Here is why they do.

    1. Deep New Jersey Roots, Real Cross-Country Experience

We are not a broker selling your move to the lowest bidder, and we are not a national call center that has never seen your street. Moving of America is a New Jersey moving company that has been loading trucks here for over 20 years, and we run New Jersey to California relocations regularly. We know how to get a truck out of a Jersey City high-rise or a Bergen County colonial, and we understand what waits on the other end: San Francisco’s steep hills, tight Victorian staircases, parking permit requirements, and buildings with strict elevator reservation windows. A move like this succeeds or fails on the details at both ends, and we have those details covered.

Yes. We pick up from every corner of the state, from Bergen and Hudson counties in the north to Cherry Hill and Cape May in the south. Wherever you live in New Jersey, our crew comes to you, loads your belongings, and manages the entire journey to San Francisco.
We are a direct carrier, not a broker. Your move stays with Moving of America from the first box to the last. Our own trained crew loads your belongings in New Jersey, and we manage the shipment all the way to your new San Francisco address instead of selling the job to an unknown third party.

    2. Binding Flat-Rate Quotes With No Surprises at Delivery

Cross-country moves are where hidden fees do the most damage. Some companies quote low over the phone, then hold your belongings on the truck in California until you pay charges you never agreed to. We refuse to operate that way. Moving of America provides a binding flat-rate quote for your New Jersey to San Francisco move before anything goes on the truck. Fuel, tolls, labor, mileage, and equipment are all built into one number. The price we give you in New Jersey is the price you pay in San Francisco.

The cost depends on the size of your home, the total volume of items being shipped, and whether you add services like packing or storage. Because every long-distance move is different, we walk through your inventory with you and provide a binding written quote upfront, so you know the full cost before you commit.

No. Your binding quote covers the complete job from door to door. There are no fuel surcharges, no long-carry fees, and no last-minute add-ons when the truck arrives. What we agree on in New Jersey is exactly what you pay, full stop.

    3. Everything a 2,900-Mile Move Requires, Under One Roof

A coast-to-coast relocation involves far more than driving a truck west. Moving of America handles the whole process: professional packing and unpacking, furniture disassembly and reassembly, careful loading and unloading, and secure storage if your San Francisco place is not ready the day your belongings arrive. Whether you are moving a studio in Hoboken or relocating an entire office from Parsippany to the Bay Area, we bring the crew, the equipment, and the long-distance experience to do it right.

We are a full-service long-distance mover. That covers residential and commercial relocations, packing and unpacking, furniture disassembly and reassembly, loading and unloading, and both short-term and long-term storage. You choose how much of the process you want us to take off your plate.
Absolutely, and for a move of this distance we strongly recommend it. Items shipped cross-country need to be packed to withstand thousands of miles on the road. Our team brings professional-grade materials and knows how to protect fragile items, electronics, artwork, and anything else that needs special handling.

    4. Licensed, Insured, and Vetted for Interstate Moves

Trusting a company with everything you own for a 2,900-mile journey requires more than a good sales pitch. Moving of America holds full interstate operating authority through the FMCSA in addition to our New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs license, and we carry comprehensive liability and cargo insurance on every shipment. Just as important, every crew member is background-checked and professionally trained by us. No day laborers, no subcontractors, no strangers we found that morning.

Yes. We are federally licensed for interstate moving through the FMCSA and hold our New Jersey state license as well. Full liability and cargo insurance covers your belongings from the moment we load in New Jersey until the last item is placed in your San Francisco home.

Our own team, start to finish. Everyone who touches your shipment has passed a background check and completed our professional training. We never hand your move off to subcontractors, which is a common practice with brokers and one of the biggest sources of cross-country moving problems.

    5. A Track Record New Jersey Customers Vouch For

Any moving company can promise a smooth coast-to-coast move. Proof is harder to come by. Moving of America has hundreds of verified five-star Google reviews from New Jersey families, professionals, and business owners, including many who trusted us with long-distance relocations. Customers come back to us for their next move and send their friends and relatives our way. That kind of repeat business only happens when a company delivers on what it promises, mile after mile.

The same themes come up again and again in our reviews: the crew arrived on time, belongings were handled with care across the entire trip, delivery happened within the promised window, and the final bill matched the quote exactly. That consistency is the standard we hold ourselves to on every relocation.
Because with us, you get accountability. National van lines and brokers pass your move between agents and subcontractors, and when something goes wrong, nobody owns the problem. With Moving of America, one company is responsible for your belongings from your New Jersey doorstep to your new home in San Francisco, and we answer for every mile in between.

What Moving of America Knows About San Francisco That Most Movers Don’t

San Francisco is, by a wide margin, the most logistically punishing major city to move into. Three things break a move here that movers from out of the area never plan for. As experienced local and office movers in San Francisco, we plan for all three before your truck leaves New Jersey.

SFMTA Runs the Permit System, And It Isn’t the Same as Other Cities

San Francisco does not use a generic city permit. The SFMTA issues a Temporary Signage permit to reserve curb space for a moving truck, and the application requires a minimum of 5 business days, with your application day, the first enforcement day, and weekends all excluded from that count.

Fees typically start around $280 to $341 for the signs, plus roughly $18 per metered space per day. The “Tow Away” signs must be posted 72 hours in advance for unmetered curbs and 24 hours in advance for metered curbs. Move work is capped to a 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. window. We handle the application, the posting, and the enforcement coordination so your loading zone is legal and clear on move day.

The Hills Decide What Truck Can Even Reach Your Door

Streets in Russian Hill, Nob Hill, Twin Peaks, and parts of Pacific Heights run grades of 20 percent or more, steep enough that a loaded full-size truck physically cannot stop or turn safely on some blocks. A 26-foot truck simply cannot navigate every street the way a car can.

This is why routing matters more here than anywhere else. We plan the approach using street-level grade data, not just GPS, and where a large truck can’t reach the address, we stage a smaller shuttle vehicle to ferry your goods the final stretch. Getting that wrong is how a move turns into a half-day of carrying boxes uphill by hand.

Victorian and Edwardian Walk-Ups Are Their Own Challenge

Much of SF’s classic housing is Victorian and Edwardian flats, two and three-story buildings with narrow interior staircases, tight turns, bay windows that restrict the angle a sofa can face, and front entries reached only by steep exterior steps. If you need packing and moving services in San Francisco or full-service movers in San Francisco, a piece that fits fine in a New Jersey colonial may not clear the stairwell of a Hayes Valley flat.

We survey the access on the front end and measure the stairwells against your largest items. When a piece won’t make the turn, the fix is partial disassembly, exterior hoisting, or, in rare cases, removing a window sash, planned ahead, not improvised on the sidewalk while the meter runs.

The NJ to San Francisco Moving Step-by-Step Process

    morris county mover
We survey your New Jersey home in person or over video and build a household goods inventory. Interstate moves are priced by weight and distance, so an accurate inventory is what makes the next step honest.
We file your SFMTA permit, confirm any building COI and freight elevator window, plan the truck approach to the grade, and lock your price in a written, binding estimate. A binding estimate guarantees the price will not increase after you sign it, the strongest protection for a long route.
Our crew packs and labels your belongings against the inventory list, with extra protection for pieces that must clear a narrow Victorian staircase. Each item is logged, so nothing is unaccounted for across the country.
Your goods travel the interstate corridor west; most loads run I-80 across the northern route, roughly 2,850 to 2,900 miles to the Bay Area. Transit typically runs 5 to 8 business days, depending on weight and scheduling.
We deliver inside your reserved SFMTA and building window, shuttle the load up the hill if the street requires it, unload against the inventory, and reassemble furniture we disassembled. If your move-out and move-in dates don’t line up, storage-in-transit holds your goods between them.

After transport, we deliver your belongings, place them as directed, and walk you through your new space to ensure everything is in order. Your goods are covered by valuation protection throughout the move.

How Much Does a Move from NJ to San Francisco Cost?

An interstate move from New Jersey to San Francisco is priced based on the total shipment weight, the distance of the move, and the specific services you select. For most households, the typical price range for a move from New Jersey to San Francisco is between $4,500 and $11,000 for a one- to four-bedroom home. Transit time usually falls between 5 and 8 business days, depending on the shipment size and scheduling factors. The precise cost and delivery window are always set in your written binding estimate, which guarantees the price before move day.

What Affects the NJ to San Francisco Price

Weight is the primary driver. Every additional thousand pounds adds real cost, so decluttering before the move pays off. Access at the SF end matters too, as a hill shuttle, a flight-of-stairs carry up a Victorian walk-up, or a high-rise freight-elevator move all add time and labor that an honest estimate accounts for up front.

Why a Binding Estimate Protects You on Interstate Moves

A non-binding estimate can be revised upward at delivery, the “price doubled” scenario that burns long-distance movers from NJ to San Francisco. A binding estimate locks the price before move day and cannot increase after you sign. Moving of America provides written binding estimates on interstate moves, so the figure you approve in New Jersey is the figure you pay in San Francisco.

Your Federal Rights on Your NJ to San Francisco Move

    Colorado movers

As an FMCSA-licensed interstate carrier (USDOT #1601312, MC #592337), Moving of America is required to provide every customer with specific federal protections:

    • The FMCSA “Your Rights and Responsibilities When You Move” booklet is required by 49 CFR §375.213.
    • A written binding estimate before your move date.
    • A Bill of Lading on move day is your legal contract and receipt for the shipment.

You can verify our operating authority directly at safer.fmcsa.dot.gov by searching USDOT #1601312. A licensed carrier holds this authority in its own name, whereas, a broker does not.

Moving into a condo can get complicated with scheduling and elevators, but they handled it well. A bit of waiting here and there, but nothing out of the ordinary.

Frequently Asked Questions About Moving from NJ to San Francisco

Transit typically runs 5 to 8 business days across roughly 2,900 miles. The exact window depends on shipment weight, scheduling, and your SF delivery and permit window. Your binding estimate states the agreed delivery spread.
Most 1–4 bedroom households fall in the $4,500–$11,000 range, priced by total weight, distance, and services. The only figure that governs your move is the written binding estimate, which locks your price before move day.
Almost always. The SFMTA requires a Temporary Signage permit to reserve curb space, with a 5-business-day minimum lead time and signs posted 72 hours ahead for the unmetered curb. Moving of America handles the application and posting.
Yes, both are routine SF challenges. We route around grades a loaded truck can’t handle and shuttle the final stretch when needed, and we survey narrow staircases in advance, using disassembly or exterior hoisting for pieces that won’t clear the turn.

Moving of America is a licensed interstate carrier (USDOT #1601312, MC #592337), not a broker. We own the trucks, employ the crew, and sign the binding estimate. Verify our authority at safer.fmcsa.dot.gov.

Yes. Storage-in-transit holds your household goods between your move-out and move-in dates, which is common when an SF building’s elevator slot or a lease start doesn’t line up with your departure from New Jersey.
