About the American Moving and Storage Association

As the representative of the nation’s household goods movers, the American Moving and Storage Association (AMSA) prides itself out being a diligent steward of the moving industry. AMSA advocates for effective government regulations and policies that enable its members to provide quality service at fair prices. In addition to advocating for consumers using professional moving and storage services, AMSA also strives to provide information that educates the public about their rights and responsibilities during a move and the value of professional moving and storage services. However, it is important to note that AMSA is not a governmental agency, and it does not have the authority to order refunds or reimbursements for damages, enforce settlements, or demand any type of compensatory payment from movers. While ProMover members have agreed to meet AMSA’s standards, participation in the ProMover program does not constitute a guarantee by AMSA of their performance. Nevertheless, AMSA routinely removes movers from its membership who fail to meet these standards.

What Is The ProMover Program All About?

On January 1, 2009, the American Moving and Storage Association (AMSA) launched an innovative consumer protection and certification program known as ProMover. This initiative is designed to combat imposters, referred to within the industry as “rogue operators,” by providing consumers with an easy way to distinguish reputable, professional movers from con artists who aim to make a quick buck at their expense. Moving of America is a proud participant in the ProMover program and fully adheres to its standards. The ProMover program advocates for ethical principles within the moving and storage industry and collaborates with federal and state governments to curb unethical moving practices; it effectively differentiates professional movers from rogue operators posing as legitimate movers. Moreover, and most critically, this program assists consumers by offering a recognizable benchmark of quality, while simultaneously elevating the moving industry by promoting and acknowledging high professional standards. To qualify as ProMovers, moving companies must undergo a stringent and rigorous review of their professional business practices. Furthermore, each mover is required to sign a Signatory Agreement affirming their commitment to uphold the AMSA Code of Ethics and bylaws, to utilize any AMSA logos, including the ProMover logo, professionally, and to comply with all FMCSA/STB consumer regulations. The ProMover program alleviates the worry and hassle associated with moving by helping consumers identify quality movers aligned with AMSA’s objectives, and by providing them with resources and support ranging from choosing a mover to obtaining an estimate, from packing tips to understanding valuation and insurance.

Who Can Apply for It And How?

Under new requirements, standards for AMSA membership have now expanded to include evaluating the company’s owners, officers, or majority stockholders for any felony convictions relevant to the jurisdictions of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), the Surface Transportation Board (STB), or any state consumer protection agency. This assessment also involves verifying company ownership with the appropriate state corporation commission and scrutinizing the applicant’s website for any improper advertising. Additionally, each new applicant is required to complete a signatory agreement affirming their commitment to adhere to FMCSA and STB regulations and to uphold the AMSA Code of Ethics.

The ProMover Logo: A Symbol of Quality

AMSA had introduced an easily-recognizable ProMover logo that stands for a set of basic, honest business principles — a distinctive, stylized “M” that at a glance will give customers the confidence and comfort of knowing they and their cherished possessions aren’t being taken for a ride. Look for this “seal of approval” on the website of any pro movers, in advertising and marketing materials, and in Yellow Page ads. Only approved to be ProMover moving companies will receive access to this logo to use it in their advertising and promotional material. Moving of America is among these selected approved companies.
